The Institution was founded in Septemer 1930 and had 4 Faculties (Operation,
Mechanics, Shipuilding, Hydro Engeneering) with 220 students.
The first
Director was A.V.Golovanov.
In 1935, the Faculty of Loading
Works`sMechaniation was opened.
The Academy teaching staff included:
V.Vvoncov, G.V.Trinkler, N.K.Ponomarev, K.K.Dubrovsky, V.L.Lychkovsky,
M.I.Volsky, I.N.Sivertsev, V.V.Davydov, S.V.Bellyustin, P.N.Shanchurov,

The Academy is headed y Academician V.Nakharov.
The Academy comprises 8 Facultiea:
whoch entroll 6800 students (2900 full-time and 3900 patr-time students). The Academy has Extra-Mural Faculties in Actrakhan, Volgograd, Rostov-on Don, Samara and training and consultation offices in Kaan and Perm. The Academy is provided with a computing centre, a lirary, copying facilities, a sport camp, a health care center training vessels, modern simulator equipment. The Museum of river fleet functions at the Institute.
365 teachers and lecturers at the Academy teaching staff memers, among them- 6 Academicians, 4 Associate Academicians, 37 Professors, Doctors of Sciences, 193 Associate Professors, Candidates of Sciences.

The Academy's research programme corresponds to the specialists' training orientation. 54 postgraduates pursue their study at the Academy. There are postgraduates courses in 15 specialities. 2 Specialied Councils for awarding Doctor's and Candidate's degrees at the Academy.
The Academy has close contacts with the US Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point; Water Construction Institute, Germany. The Academy takes part in the work of international congress and seminars.
