1. The University was established on the basis of Udmurt National
Pedagogical Institute founded in 1931.
Many outstanding scientists worked and are now working at the University: V.Ye.Meyer,
B.O.Korman, V.A.Uskov, V.M.Markov, D.A.Yashin, V.V.Tuganayev, V.V.Caskin, I.E.Yeselevich,
M.P.Prokopyev, I.V.Tarakanov, S.M.Reshetnikov, Ye.L.Tonkov, Yu.S.Perevozchikov,
V.Ye.Vladykin, R.D.Goldina, P.S.Semenov, V.I.Kudinov.
The present Rector of the University is Professor V.A.Zhuravlev.

which enroll 8500 students (6000 full-time and 2500 extra-mural students).
The University has an academic humanitarian and scientific, educational and research
complex, which includes:
- the institute of mathematics modelling
- a department of informatics
- the institute of the Ural region Finno-Ugric peoples' culture and history
- the institute of human problemss
- the centre of computer networks and electronic communications
- the institute of ecology and biological resources of Udmurtiya
- the centre of practical psychology
The University structure includes a library, a Sports Palace, a sport and health care
centre, a botanical garden, a biological station, a geological and ecological station,
the House of Nature, a publishing-house, 3 museums, a dispensary.
The University has a wide-scale business enviroment (research-production commercial
enterprises) - a group of joint enterprises, small entreprises, joint-stock companies,
the supporting funds for scientific, sports, pedagogics and cultural initiatives.
3. 723 teachers and lecturers work at the University, among them - 72 Doctors
of Sciences and 322 Associate Professors, Candidates of Sciences.
4. Students are trained in 32 specialites. The University is planning to offer
a two-level system of education leading to a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree.
Students are taught in Russian, Udmurt, English, German, French, Finnish, Hungrian and
Chinese.
5. The University's research programme corresponds to the specialists' training
orientation. There are Specialized Academic Councils for awarding Doctor's and Candidate's
degrees. 100 postgraduates pursue their study at the University.
6. The University has international ties and agreements which foreign Universities,
scientific centres and firms in Finland, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Italy, Japan, South
Korea and China. Foreign scientists and teachers are invited to deliver lecturers and
reports, to discuss problems. The scientists of the Udmurt State University participate in
conferences, seminars in foreign universities.
