1. The Institute was founded in September 1933 and had one Faculty
(Therapeutics) with 170 students. The first Rector of the Institute was a
well-known in the republic surgeon G.G.Sterkhov. In 1975, the Faculty of
Pediatrics was opened, in 1980 - the Faculty of Stomatology, in 1991 -
Qualification Improvement, in 1992 - Pre-Institute Training.
Outstanding scientists worked and are working at the Institute: Professors
V.N.Parin, A.K.Pukhidsky, A.Ya.Gubergrits, N.F.Rupasov, S.I.Voronchikhin,
A.I.Perevoshchikova, A.M.Zagrebin, V.S.Chudnova, M.F.Muravyov, B.F.Mashgatov,
L.A.Leshchinsky, Associate Academician of the Russian Academy of Technological
Sciences G.Ye.Danilov.
2. The Institute comprises 5 Faculties which enroll 3000 students. Annually over 1000 students receive instruction at the Qualification Improvement Faculty. The Institute structure includes a research laboratory, a computinf centre, a scientific library, a museum.
3. 348 teachers and lecturers work at 49 Departments and courses, among them - 43 Professors, Doctors of Sciences and 183 Associate Professors, Candidates of Sciences.

The Institute provides postgraduate training. Since 1991, the Institute has been training students from foreign countries. The Faculty of Pre-Institute Training has preparatory courses, a preparatory department, a Sunday school and other forms of pre-entry education.
5. Science researches are conducted in 13 trends: gastroenterology, traumatology, child's organism age peculiarites in normal and abmormal states, caqrdiology and others.
