1. The University was founded in 1967 on the basis of a
branch of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute and the faculty of History and
Philology of the Chuvash Pedagogical Institute. At the movement of its
foundation, the University had 7 Faculties:
- History and Philology
- Economics
- Medicine
- Chemistry
- Electrical Engineering
- General Engineering
- Industrial Electrification
The first Rector of the University was Professor S.F.Saikin.
The University
academic staff included well-known scientists : M.Ya.Sirotcin, S.P.Gorsky,
V.G.Yegorov, I.D.Kuznetsov.
At present the University is headed by
Associate Academician L.P.Kurakov.
2. The University comprises 12 Faculties:
- Physics and Mathematics
- Chemistry

- Philology
- the Chuvash Philology and Culture
- Medicine

- Electrical Engineering
- Electrification and Industrial Automation
- Machine Building
- Civil Engineering
- Law
which enroll over 10000 students (6800 full-time, 1500 part-time, 1900
extra-mural students).
The University structure includes:
- two research institutes
- a research department
- a computing centre
- a library
- a publishing department
- 5 problems research laboratories
- a palace of culture
- a sports camp
- a health care centre
In 1991, the Higher School of business was opened, providing instruction in
economics and production managment; economics and labour sociology.
3. 865 teachers and lecturers work at the University, among them -
77 Professors, Doctors of Sciences and 446 Associate Professors, Candidates of
Sciences.
4. Students are trained in 24 specialities:

5. The University research programm corresponds to the students'
training orientation.
Researchers and the acdemic staff members are trained at the postgraduate
courses in 23 specialities. There are 5 Specialized Councils for awarding
Candidate's and Doctor's degrees.
